Tips for Successfully
Dispensing Reading Glasses
Here are some ideas that our partners have found helpful
in dispensing reading glasses. It’s really quite simple
if you follow these suggestions. (It doesn't matter if your
clients don't actually read. Many groups find these glasses
function, and refer to them, as "working" glasses.)
1. Arrange the readers (still in their bags) by power in
a row from left to right (lower powers on the left) behind
the dispensing table.
2. For each dispenser, give them one of
each of the powers that you have. Tell them to put them
in order in front of them from low to high powers.
3. Have the client sit across from the dispenser. Tell them
that you are first going to find the right power, then the
right frame.
4. Give them a power testing card (or any paper with type)
and tell them to hold it at the distance they need to be able
to see. Then, put one of the readers on the client and tell
them to hold the card where the type is clearest for them.
The younger the client, the lower power you can start with.
5. If the type (at the 20/30 line if you are using the
card below) is clearest for them closer
than their preferred distance, the power is too
strong, replace the glasses with a lower power.
If it is clearest farther away, the glasses
are too weak. Do this until the client
is satisfied with the clarity of the card at the right distance.
6. Then go to the row of readers behind
you and get some different frame shapes and materials in
the power the client wants. Give them a choice and you’re
done.
Note: if no power seems to make the type clear for the
client, they may have other eye conditions which would suggest
a referral to an eye care professional.
